Invitation to the thirsty: come and drink!

Welcome to my blog! I pray you find the content on this site helpful and encouraging to your relationship with God – who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The inspiration for the name of this blog originated from my reading of the passage in John 4 (verses 1-26). This is where Jesus interacts with the Samaritan woman and eventually offers her ‘living water.’ When we read in context, we come to the realization that Jesus is not speaking about literal water. Instead, he is using “water” as a metaphor for something else. Studies have shown that without the drinking of water, death will be the final result in a few days time. On the contrary, the continuation of life depends on a constant supply of water. Nonetheless, this cannot be poisoned water. It cannot be dirty water; nor can it be salty water (which the people of the time would have gotten from the dead sea). This is where the offer of living water, which stands in opposition to deadly water, sounds really good. Ultimately, this was the kind of living water Jesus was referring to in this passage. Three chapters later in the same gospel account, John, reveals to us that this “living water” that Jesus offers, is the Holy Spirit (7:37-39). With the knowledge that literal water does indeed sustain life, it is a fitting illustration for the receiving of the Holy Spirit, which signifies spiritual life. Since Jesus’s death, resurrection and ascension, a door has now been opened which was not before. And through this door, everyone who believes in Him as their Lord and Savior enters and receives this living water. Through the Gospels, Jesus tells us that faith is the key to accessing this door (himself), and this is what opens a person up to the gift of living water.

If you are new to Christianity, or are seeking, you might ask, “but if Jesus is who I need to put my faith in, what does that have to do with the Holy Spirit?” Great question! The short answer is that it is a package deal. A careful reading of the scriptures renders to us that God has revealed himself to humanity as a triune God, also known as the God-head. This names God as the One Almighty God, the uncreated Creator, who has always existed eternally as three distinct persons yet sharing the same essence (divine nature). God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit. They have always existed in perfect unity – in a communal relationship of love that will continue to be so all through eternity (past, present, and future). We even see a glimpse of this highlighted in the very first chapter of the Bible (Genesis 1:1-2 and 1:26). In my estimation, the idea of the Trinity could not be man made because in our logical world 3 does not equal 1. There is some mystery here, so any effort to explain it will not fully do it justice. However, there are some very helpful models out there that attempt to do this. To keep it simple for now, let’s just go with what the Bible teaches. So, believing in Jesus gives you access to this living water. And this living water is the Holy Spirit himself, who helps you start living spiritually. This is the same Holy Spirit that Jesus promised his disciples, which was fulfilled in the book of Acts. In the book of Revelation (7:17), Jesus leads those who are in heaven to the very source of living water. That source is the author and originator of it… for we are told elsewhere in scripture that God is the source of all life. The Psalmist informs us that God “is the fountain of life” (Psalm 36:9). The Trinitarian link then looks like this: the Holy Spirit is the giver of living water to all on earth. He brings people to spiritual life. Jesus, who is in Himself living water, leads those in Him to the very source of that eternal life. The Father is that source. Jesus said that, “As the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself” (John 5:26; compare with Deuteronomy 30:20 – “for the Lord is your life”). This is living water, indeed! [There will be more on the Trinity in a future post – stay tuned]

Throughout the entire Bible there is a thread of the river of water of life. This river signifies the flowing triune God. It starts in Genesis in the Garden of Eden, where there is the river that flows (this happens after the mentioning of the tree of life). It then reaches out to all the earth. This river consummates in the river of water of life in the New Jerusalem. There, the river of life flows from the throne and supplies the entire city of God. God Himself becomes our source of life, the water of life, for us to drink and enjoy. Here are some verses where we can see the triune God, as the river of water of life: Genesis 2:10-14, Exodus 17:6/Numbers 20:11, Psalm 46:4, Ezekiel 47:5-9, John 4:10-14, 1 Corinthians 10:4 and Revelation 22:1.

My desire for this blog is twofold. The first is to encourage my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ with biblical truth as they journey on their paths of sanctification. The second is to simultaneously be a bridge in which the Lord will use to reach the “unreached” with the Good News of Jesus Christ. If you are like me, our thirsty hearts are so prone to wander from the fount of every blessing. But the good news of this living water is that it increases your thirst for more. Therefore, when we have this thirst for more in our wanderings, may we constantly come back to the only One who can satisfy it. So, wherever you may find yourself today, I implore you to join me as we stop drinking from dry wells, or as Jeremiah puts it, “broken cisterns that cannot hold water” (Jeremiah 2:13). Instead, let us accept the invitation from the prophet Isaiah to: “Come, all you who are thirsty. Come to the waters. You who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost” (Isaiah 55:1). Let us drink the water of life from the spring of living water. The Well which contains the water of life is deep enough for all to drink. And if we accept the invitation to drink from it and begin to find true satisfaction, may we point everyone we come across to this Well too, just as the Samaritan woman did (John 4:39-42). For He holds an abundance of water for the whole world. Are you thirsty? Come to Christ and drink!

“The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.” – Revelation 22:17

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”John 3:16-17

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”John 10:10
