Jesus + Nothing = EVERYTHING!

In a world constantly shouting that we need more—more success, more stuff, more status—there’s a quiet, radical invitation to find sufficiency in a single name. It’s a message that challenges our modern obsession with “more” by proposing a revolutionary equation: Jesus + Nothing = EVERYTHING.

Believe it or not, Jesus is a name quite familiar in most places in the world today. But depending on who you ask, you might get different responses about who he is. Some take him as a good moral teacher, some take him as a healing man, while others take him as just a Jewish man who lived over two thousand years ago. In fact, the Bible contains one of my favorite responses to the question of Jesus’s identity: in one of the Gospels, Jesus asks Peter directly about who he thinks He is and whether he was going to leave Him like the others. But Peter, who had been one of his closest friends for a few years, then confesses, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” (John 6:68-69). Peter came to the realization that Jesus was truly who he claimed to be—God in the flesh.

So, like Peter, have you thought about who Jesus is? Your answer to this question changes everything. When we come to understand who Jesus really is, we realize that everything we need is found in Him. And if this is true (which I believe it is), then the mathematical equation for our lives would look something like this: Jesus + Nothing = EVERYTHING. There is absolutely nothing else out there that can truly give us identity, value, and significance.

The Supremacy of Christ.

The Bible is uncompromising in its declaration of Christ’s supreme position over all creation. He is not merely part of God’s plan; He is the centerpiece of existence. Everything that exists was made through Him and for Him. He is the preeminent one.

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” – (Colossians 1:15-17)

The Divinity of Christ.

Jesus wasn’t just a great teacher or a prophet; He was and is God in the flesh. This doctrine—the divinity of Christ—is essential to Christian faith. If He were merely a man, His sacrifice would be insufficient to cover the sins of the world.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” – (John 1:1, 14)

“I and the Father are one.” – (John 10:30)

“When Thomas saw the resurrected Christ, he declared, “My Lord and my God!”” – (John 20:28)

The Sufficiency of Christ.

Because He is supreme and divine, Jesus is utterly sufficient for our salvation, our spiritual growth, and our eternal hope. We need nothing in addition to Him. Salvation is “Jesus + nothing”—not Jesus plus good works, not Jesus plus rituals, and not Jesus plus human effort. He completed ALL the work on the cross!

“For by one offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.” – (Hebrews 10:14)

“For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.” – (Colossians 2:9-10)

“He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.” – (1 Peter 2:24)

The Lordship of Christ.

If He is God, He demands and deserves to be Lord of our lives. Acknowledging His supremacy and divinity leads us to surrender to His authority. Calling Him Savior without calling Him Lord is to miss the totality of who He is. If he is your savior, he will become your Lord.

“Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” – (Romans 10:9)

“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” – (Philippians 2:9-11)

If you ask me who Jesus is, I will tell you that he is and always will be the greatest being (fully God and fully human) to ever set foot on this planet. He had no servants, yet they called him Master. He had no degree, yet they called him Teacher. He had no medicines, yet they called him Healer. He had no army, yet kings feared Him. He won no military battles, yet He conquered the world. He committed no crime, yet they crucified Him. He was buried in a tomb, yet He lives today. His name is Jesus, the Redeemer of the world!!! Trust Him and His gospel message of salvation, and you will be guaranteed eternity FOREVER (Acts 16:31). We were created to live forever, but not in this current world. Jesus promised us he has gone to prepare a place for us, for all who would trust in him. And this place is what we call heaven. Don’t you want to be there? I know I do.

So, similar to the question Jesus asked Peter, who do YOU say that Jesus is? For the believer, who has come to this knowledge, the equation: Jesus + Nothing = EVERYTHING is the ultimate assurance. When you have Jesus, you possess everything truly necessary for lasting peace, a divine purpose, and the hope of eternity. If you have not yet made this discovery, I invite you to consider this “new math” that changes everything. The Gospel is an open invitation to receive salvation, which is received not by our own efforts but by faith alone in the finished work of Christ on the cross (John 3:16). By turning from your own way and trusting in His completed sacrifice, you can find the true rest and the life you were created for (Eph. 2:8-9, Titus 3:5).
